A quote from a message on the Subud Canada website (Sam) : Last night was the Fashion Show in the always spacious and atmospheric Dogana Hall.....i had a blast watching the wonderfully aesthetic and well-organised show.......7 designers......countless modes and fashions, colors, cuts, styles, patterns,.....not to mention the all-age affair of models strutting down the cat walk....all shapes and sizes too from little 5 year olds to seniors with round bellies. Zone 7 Meeting-Partial Minutes – July 24-26,2005 from Julia Hurd ZONE 7 MEETINGS July 24 and 26, 2005 Innsbruck, Austria DELEGATES IN ATTENDANCE: Cuba: Latifah Lourdes Gomez Hernandez, Chair; Samuel Perez Morillas, KC, Magdalena Chao Gandarilla, KC Canada: Matthew Baerveldt, Chair; Latifah Brett, CC; Atisah Moreau, KC; Paul Roberge, KC Mexico: Maemunah Torres, KC; Stella Jassan, NH with proxy for Rafael Tapia, Chair; Mariamah Flores Torres, in-coming Zone 7 Representative Suriname: Benjamin Kasanwidjojo, National Secretary; Hilary Marica, proxy for Chair; Arvin Soeranin, National Treasurer U.S.: Amrit Bhuie, National Chair; Susannah Rosenthal, vice-chair with proxy for Simon Shima, CC; Sylvia Margolin, KC; Mashud McGee, KC Zone Executive Committee: Julia Hurd, Chair; Laurie Lathrop, secretary; Various members attended at different times. JULY 21 I. Trademarking the word “Subud” and the Subud symbol. Canada explored the issue and suggests the legal requirements are complicated. Registering both by all countries has been requested by ISC. Each country is in a different stage of registration and has its own laws in this process. Because of the number and variety of complications, and for the sake of standardization and proper licensing, Subud Canada suggests an international lawyer be retained to deal with the issues for each country when that country is ready to pay for the process of licensing via an increased contribution to ISC. The countries in Zone 7 voted unanimously to support the following proposal: Because ISC owns the Subud symbol and name, and would like them to be trademarked worldwide with uniform standards and licensing arrangements, we recommend that WSA/ISC register the name Subud and the Subud symbol for those countries that are ready to pay for this service. II. Joint Wings Proposal: The second topic of discussion arose from the overlapping needs of the wings and affiliates. It is important to keep track of and have access to such files for fundraising and to have an efficient paper trail. Furthermore, there is strength in collaboration. Zone 7 agreed to the following proposal: Because there is currently no central or efficient place for wings and affiliates administrative function and support, it is proposed that the wings share administrative facilities and costs. JULY 27 III. CUBA: 332 members in 11 groups in Cuba, 2 groups in Havana, 2 groups in Camaguey, 6 groups in Manzanillo, 1 in Niqueros. They are distributed this way because Subud is not legal in Cuba and they are not allowed to have a large hall for meeting. They meet in members’ homes. Approaches to legalize through different ministries have been tried but without success so far. When they return from this congress they will have an interview with the authorities. After that they will discuss their next step. IV. Mexico: Groups seem to be getting smaller, but at the same time members are accepting more responsibility. There are more or less 50 members in four groups. Usaha Mulia Abadi has become a national project and work is going ahead harmoniously, and they already have a latihan hall designed be Muchtar Martins. Next they will build cabins and dormitories for about ten people each for sleeping. Including camping spaces, there will be space for meetings. At this time the maximum they can handle is 25. The land for this project is near the town of Atlautla, an economically undeveloped area. Social projects continue to be developed there. V. Suriname: Suriname wishes to become a member of Zone 7. Subud in Suriname started in 1967 when an Indonesian consul was posted there. Bapak visited in the 60’s when there were 300 members who were mostly Javanese. Now the Subud members consist of many cultures, somewhat like a little “United Nations.” They have focused on three tasks since the Bali congress in 2001, these being: 1. Complete the house in Paramaribo, which they built themselves. (One of three houses owned by Subud Suriname.) 2. Turn leadership over to youth who are well educated, energetic, and speak English 3. Leave membership in Zone 8 and join Zone 7 The issue of changing zones was discussed. The primary reason is for communication. The rest of Zone 8 is Spanish speaking except for Brazil (which speaks Portuguese). Suriname is officially Dutch speaking, but most people speak English. The members of Subud Suriname would like to be in a Zone where they can communicate better, stay current with news and business, and they can move, talk, and laugh with other members. Delegates of the meeting voted unanimously that Suriname become a member of Zone 7. To move forward, we will coordinate with Zone 8. If they agree, this will be proposed to WSA members during a general session (plenary). (Zone 8 has since approved this change. It will be brought to the plenary.) VI. SICA wishes to have a Zone SICA Representative who is tested in. VII. Privacy Policy: Privacy has become a problem, for instance many people do not want their names or roles to appear on the internet. The outgoing WSC addressed this issue, but it has not been resolved. It affects publication of minutes, photos, list servers, etc. Ways of implementing privacy were discussed and Subud Canada suggested a proposal for a general policy for privacy as follows: All Subud bodies that are responsible for members information should establish, publish, and implement privacy standards. Zone 7 delegates voted unanimously in favor of this proposal. The proposal leaves to each body the development of the details of their policy. (More minutes to come) ********************************************************** 4. The ongoing saga of the symphony concert cd production (everything at a world congress has a STORY!) Last you all heard was that I was stumped in the mastering process,(producing the master recording of the symphony) but after a little sleep and a meal and some ice cream and some coffee, I had a good idea, and it worked. I finished printing out the back up master at midnight last night, and Marston and I were up at 5:30 and on the 6:30 train to Munich to make it all work. Marston and I spent the day in Munich and brought back 499 beautiful and beautiful sounding CDs. I did my laundry while we were waiting for them to duplicate them. It was very good to have Marston along. I couldn't really have handled bringing them all back on the train without another hand. But, hallelujah, the project is done, and well done. Tomorrow I have a day off, and Thursday as well, and then I'm on a bus at 6 AM Friday morning to the Munich airport, and then I see my beautiful daughter in Philadelphia. I'm going to leave this short because I hear my bed a-calling. There is testing with Ibu Rahaiyu tonight, but sleep and health is also important. Poor Marston is developing a little tickle in the throat. I gave him some Cepastat, and he went to bed. After a gelato cone. Love ya.
